One of the most common issues people experience throughout their lifetime is back pain. 8 out of 10 people are affected by back pain at some point in their lives. The spine is divided into different regions. From the neck (cervical), to the middle (thoracic), to the lower (lumbar), to the tailbone, pain can be experienced in different ways depending on which area is affected. The lumbar region is reportedly one of the most common areas to be affected. Pain can range from mild to debilitating, even causing people to have to miss work due to the inability to function. Thoracic/middle back pain is less common than lumbar/ lower back pain as there is a smaller range of movement and great stability. However, when it does occur, the pain can be severe. Most back pain is known to come on suddenly and can last anywhere from a few days to some weeks, usually subsiding on its own.
Back pain causes can originate from a number of different sources including injury, activity or some medical conditions and increases with age. Thoracic/ middle back pain is often the result of muscular irritation and joint dysfunction. Posture is a major contributor and source of middle to upper back pain as well as injury. Females are also more likely to suffer from this type of back pain.
The lumbar/ lower back is strong, supportive and flexible, allowing for a range of movement including bending and twisting. This makes it especially susceptible to pain and injury. A torn or pulled muscle or ligament is usually the cause of lower back pain. Other lower back pain causes can include repetitive movements, strenuous movements and sports injuries which can lead to sprains and strains, causing serious pain.
